actress in Iran gets sentenced to 90 lashes, sounds painful…

It would be really weird to live in Iran; they’re fucking crazy there. But the people who live there already know this, right? It’s not like all of sudden people there realize it’s a terrible place run by terrible people. So, if you’re an actor or actress in Iran, you probably shouldn’t do a movie that shows how awful it is there unless you plan on never going back, from this story:

Actress Marzieh Vafamehr has been sentenced to a year in jail and 90 lashes for her role in a film about the limits imposed on artists in the Islamic republic, an Iranian opposition website reported Sunday.

Vafamehr was arrested in July after appearing in “My Tehran for Sale,” which came under harsh criticism in conservative circles.

The film, produced in collaboration with Australia, tells the story of a young actress in Tehran whose theatre work is banned by the authorities. She is then forced to lead a secret life in order to express herself artistically.

I’ve been flicked with a towel once, and it really stung. So, I know exactly what this woman is going to have to go through, and trust me those 90 lashes are really going to hurt. And not to defend Iran’s medieval punishment, but she knew what she was getting in to; they made a movie about this exact thing… oh, now I see: this is all a publicity stunt for the movie. Typical Hollywood.

Now all three hikers who were imprisoned in Iran and convicted of being spies have been released. The chick was let out about a year ago because she wasn’t feeling well. The guys have now been released for $500,000 each; because that’s usually what countries do when they have a convicted spy, let them buy their freedom. I’m starting to think they were actually just hiking. From this story:

“Today can only be described as the best day of our lives,” the statement read. “We have waited for nearly 26 months for this moment,” it added.

It was not clear how long the men and their families would stay in Oman. When Shourd arrived, she made a round of thank you visits to the people who put up her $500,000 bail.

The three were accused of spying but have all along claimed they were hiking in Iraq’s Kurdistan region and crossed Iran’s border by mistake.

I wonder if the hike was worth it, as in was it a really great place to hike; not worth the 26 months in an Iranian prison, of course, but worth the risk. You don’t hike along the Iraq and Iran border without knowing what happens if you get caught in Iran.

It’s like this one time when I was a kid and was supposed to stay in my room with our puppy while my parents had a New Years Eve party, but I really wanted some party snacks. So, I took the puppy and ventured out, and it was exciting. There were people all over the place and for the most part no one noticed me. I was just about to grab a handful of chips when this wasted chick saw the puppy. She grabbed it, spun around and the fell down. Luckily, the puppy was unharmed. And with all the commotion I forgot about the snacks, grabbed the puppy and hurried back to my room. It’s basically the same thing.

The three hikers who were thrown in an Iranian prison a couple of years ago accused of spying should all be reunited at home soon. The chick was already allowed to go home because she wasn’t feeling well, and now after being convicted of being spies, Iran is going to let the two guys leave for $500,000 each, from this story:

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in an interview aired on NBC’s “Today” show, predicted the Americans could be freed “in a couple of days.” He described the bail offer as a “humanitarian gesture” and repeated complaints about attention for Iranians held in U.S. prisons.

This is really embarrassing for Iran; they’re clearly just trying to save face here. Unless I’m not aware that international spies, convicted of such by the countries courts, can go home for half a million dollars. In Iran’s defense, it’s really hard to determine if someone’s a spy. “Are you a spy?” ‘No.’ “Hmm. That’s what a spy would probably say.” But then they let the chick go a little while back because she was sick. At that point Iran must have been sure they weren’t spies – you don’t let spies go back to the country they’re spying for, you just don’t, no matter how sick they are.

What these three went through must have been horrible, but don’t worry, within a year, they’re all going to be rich; book deals, movie rights, speaking engagements. I bet one of them because some sort of Ambassador of Something Outrageous that Countries do to International Prisoners.

I would like to make the movie, it’d be called: Don’t Hike There Stupid!

Iran – the country – is all pissed off at the 2012 Olympic symbol and are threatening to boycott the games, from this story:

The secretary general of Iran’s National Olympic Committee said Iran sent a letter to International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge. The letter claims the 2012 logo spells out “Zion,” a biblical term widely recognized to refer to the city of Jerusalem.

Iran is calling this racist. So, I guess, anything that refers to anything Israeli is automatically racist against people from Iran? And this has nothing to do with Israel. It says “2012,” rather poorly, but it’s England, what do you expect? I’m pissed off because it’s a stupid logo. It’s like when a kid gives you a picture and you have to pretend it’s great, but really you have no idea what the hell it is until they say something that gives it away. Kids are usually terrible artists.

Wow, that is a really insensitive heading. But still, it’s not a new thing that pirates are hijacking boats in the waters off Somalia, right? It is new that the pirates killed the hostages, from this story:

The Adams, Macay and Riggle departed Feb. 15 from Mumbai, India, and were headed to Salalah, Oman, when the pirates hijacked the Quest on Friday. U.S. warships and drones shadowed the vessel’s movements until Tuesday, when a rocket-propelled grenade was fired from the Quest at a U.S. guided-missile destroyer. U.S. forces rushed the Quest and found the four Americans fatally wounded. Thirteen pirates were detained and two killed in the incident.

Sailing near Somalia is about as stupid as hiking along the border of Iraq and Iran, but, really, who would be that stupid…
